Well this is then not anyone's problem but mine :-(

I'm on OSX Server 10.6.4 and this is the only PHP issue I've come across.

Is there perhaps some PHP setting at play here?...
Sure I won't be the first OSX Server user to need this PHP Class.

Are you sure it is not the PHP code you have written to generate the thumbnail? Your PHP version seems ok. Can it be something else ?...
